The Kiwanis
Club of St. Joseph and The St. Joseph Kiwanis Foundation are proud to list the
St. Joseph Kiwanis Foundation 2006-2007 scholarship recipients.
Each year
approximately 20-25 scholarships are awarded.
Scholarships range from an annual low of $250 to a high of $1,500.
For 2006-07, with Foundation investment income up slightly, but continuing to be
depressed compared to pre-2000 investment performance, 19 scholarships were awarded.
Since 1965
the Foundation has awarded approximately $780,000 to graduates of our local high
schools. This year eight recipients were Lakeshore High School Graduates,
eight graduated from Lake
Michigan Catholic High School and seven graduated from St. Joseph High School.
Our club and
Foundation are very proud and supportive of our 19 scholarship recipients.

Applications
are available from the advisors at St. Joseph High School, Lakeshore High
School, Lake Michigan Catholic High School and Michigan Lutheran High
School. Applications should be completed and sent to the above address.
The St. Joseph Kiwanis
Foundation is a private foundation and was established in 1965 to provide
financial aid to local students who are, or will be, pursuing undergraduate
college or university degrees. We
entertain applications from St. Joseph, Lake Michigan Catholic, Lakeshore and
Michigan Lutheran High School seniors, as well as graduates from those
high schools currently enrolled in a college or university.
Our scholarships are granted after careful review of completed applications and
supporting material. They are
granted based upon academic achievement, citizenship, desire for higher
education, attitude, and financial need. A
student's grade point average is not the most important factor in our
decision. From time to time we have provided a scholarship as that
little pat on the back or positive push for a student who may not have
outstanding grades or financial need.
The above
application is not currently an on-line fill-in form. To use the above
application you will have to select it, print it on paper and fill it out.

Students
Often Targeted For Scholarship Scams

by Trish Costello, University of Arkansas
Scholarships are a good way to finance a college education, but they are not
always easy to find. People who recognize students' needs may try to take
advantage. There are many fraudulent scholarship services that students should
beware of before investing money in finding a scholarship, experts say.
Legitimate companies rarely charge students for a list of scholarships and never
guarantee students the scholarship or grant, Ohio Attorney General Betty D.
Montgomery said. Free databases, such as www.fastweb.com, are available for
students to use. These are the same databases companies use when they charge
students to find scholarships, said Ed Schroeder, director of the Financial Aid
Office at University of Arkansas. "The biggest tip I can give anybody is if
it costs money it's most likely a scam," Schroeder said.
Six Signs Of a Scam:
There are six signs a company is running a scam, according to the Federal Trade
Commission:
|
1.
|
"The
scholarship is guaranteed or your money back." Companies cannot
guarantee scholarships, and refunds often have conditions that make the
money impossible to get back.
|
|
2.
|
"You
can't get this information anywhere else." Most university
scholarship offices have a list of available scholarships.
|
|
3.
|
"May
I have your credit card number to hold the scholarship?" Sometimes
companies charge credit card or bank numbers without permission of the
account holder.
|
|
4.
|
"We
do all the work." Scholarship applications contain information to
which only the person applying should have access. Students must apply for
their own scholarships.
|
|
5.
|
"The
scholarship will cost money." Students should not pay companies that
claim to hold a scholarship. Free money doesn't cost anything.
|
|
6.
|
"You've
been selected by a national foundation." This almost always is a
gimmick. Advertisements that claim students have won contests are
gimmicks, too, especially when the student never entered a contest.
"Scams are usually played on high school juniors and seniors, when
they can get all the information from the scholarship office,"
Schroeder said.
